New in Singapore, Mamma — What Is a Doula and Do You Need One Here?

HELLO, SALUT, HOLA MAMMA,

If you've just landed in Singapore boxes half-unpacked, still figuring out which app to use for groceries, and somewhere in the middle of all of that, realising you are pregnant or getting very close to your due date I want you to know something first:

YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS.

And if someone has mentioned the word doula and you smiled and nodded while internally Googling "what even is a doula" this post is for you.

I know this feeling intimately. I moved to Singapore from Panama in 2010. I became a mother here, far from my own family, navigating a healthcare system that was excellent but completely unfamiliar. And it was my own birth experience unexpected, intense, and ultimately one of the most powerful moments of my life that led me to become a doula.

So let me answer your question, honestly and warmly, the way I would over a cup of tea.

What Is a Doula?

A doula is a trained birth and postpartum professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth.

We are not doctors. We are not midwives. We do not make clinical decisions or perform medical procedures. What we do is stay with you. We hold space for your experience, help you understand your options, support your body through labour, and walk alongside you in those tender, overwhelming, beautiful first weeks with your baby.

Think of a doula as the knowledgeable, calm, deeply caring person on your team who is focused entirely 100% on you.

AND THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING.

There Are Two Types of Doulas

Here's the Difference

A Birth Doula supports you through pregnancy and labour. This includes:

✓ Prenatal meetings where we talk through your birth vision, options, your fears, prepare for what birth would feel and how to work with it, we go though your questions, and what to expect at your chosen hospital in Singapore

✓ Continuous in-person support throughout active labour — breathing techniques, movement, comfort measures, reassurance.

✓ Partner support — so your husband or partner feels confident and present, not lost in the corner of the delivery room

✓ Support for your first moments of feeding and bonding after baby arrives

✓ A postnatal debrief to process your birth experience, whatever it looked like, postpartum support with feeding, baby caring, settling and anything that can be challenging on that point

A Postpartum Doula supports you after the birth in what I lovingly call the Fourth Trimester. This includes:

✓ Newborn care guidance — feeding, settling, bathing, those first confusing weeks

✓ Breastfeeding support and troubleshooting

✓ Emotional reassurance and a safe space to process the enormous transition you are in

✓ Rest opportunities while I care for baby

✓ Partner support, because this is a transformation for your whole family

But Singapore Has Excellent Hospitals! So Why a Doula?

This is the question I hear most from expat mammas, and it is a completely fair one.

Yes Singapore's maternity hospitals are world-class. The medical care here is something I genuinely appreciate. But here is what Singapore's hospitals cannot always offer you: time with you.

Nurses are skilled and caring, and they are also managing multiple patients. They change shifts. They have clinical responsibilities that pull their attention in many directions.

Your doula stays. From the moment you call her in early labour, through every contraction, until your baby is in your arms, she is there. No shift changes. No divided attention.

AND FOR AN EXPAT MAMMA? This is especially significant.

Because when your mother cannot fly in for the month. When your best friend is in a different timezone. When you are recovering from birth in a city you love but that is still, in many ways, unfamiliar having someone consistent, experienced, and wholly focused on you is not a luxury. It is the village you deserve.

I work with families from all over the world — French, American, British, Australian, Scandinavian, Latin American, and more. I offer support in English, French, and Spanish. I am registered as a birth doula at Thomson Medical, Mount Elizabeth Orchard, Mount Elizabeth Novena, Raffles Hospital, Gleneagles, NUH, and KK Women's & Children's Hospital.

Wherever you are planning to give birth in Singapore, I can be there with you.

What Does the Research Say?

The evidence for doula support is consistent and clear. Studies show that continuous labour support is associated with:

  • Shorter labours

  • Lower rates of medical intervention

  • Reduced need for pain medication

  • Higher rates of breastfeeding success

  • Significantly higher birth satisfaction — for both mammas and partners

But beyond the research, here is what my clients tell me: I felt safe. I felt heard. I did not feel alone.

And that — that is where the real magic happens.

Is This You, Mamma?

You might especially benefit from doula support if:

  • Your family is not in Singapore and cannot be present for the birth or postpartum period

  • This is your first baby and you feel unsure of what to expect in Singapore's hospitals

  • You have had a difficult previous birth experience and want more support this time

  • Your partner wants to be involved but is feeling nervous about their role

  • You are hoping for a low-intervention or unmedicated birth

  • You are planning a VBAC and want experienced support alongside your medical team

  • You simply want to feel support in one of the most intense, beautiful experiences of your life

Whether you're preparing for an unmedicated birth, planning for an epidural, hoping for a water birth, or scheduled for a caesarean your birth vision is valid. And you deserve a team that honours it. Your birth experience is an intimate moment between you, your partner, and your baby. A moment you will cherish for years to come and I would be delighted to be part of your journey.
